ACCIÓN FARMACOLÓGICA= Pharmacological action: Vulnerario. purgativo.

COMPOSICIÓN QUÍMICA= Chemical composition: Two novel triterpene glycosides were isolated from M. pigra. The aglycon of these 2 compds. was identified as machaerinic acid by 1H- and 113C-NMR spectroscopy and by comparison with an authentic sample. This aglycon is substituted at position C-3 by an identical oligosaccharide chain in these glycosides, and at position C-21 by either a Z/E-methoxycinnamic unit or an E-cinnamic acid unit.

Stem and Leaf: In Guyana, a decoction is used to treat thrush in babies and bed-wetting in children.

Leaf: Leaves are macerated in the hands and rubbed on the eyes of babies or children to put them to sleep when they are irritable, by the Guyana Patamona.
