Blepharocalyx tweediei (Myrtaceae) is a medium sized treelet that grows by the riverbanks of the Plate River basin in Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil. Known by the common name of anacahuita, the leaves are reputed as a treatment of respiratory diseases, amongst others. However, and in spite of its widely accepted medicinal use, the pharmacological properties of anacahuita have not been studied to date. From a phytochemical point of view, the essential oil has been fully characterised, and could be involved in the anti cough properties claimed for this species.
