Native to South Europe, grown as an ornamental.

Flowers—cardioactive, tonic, antispasmodic, purgative, emmenagogue, deobstruent (used in liver diseases and sexual debility).
Seeds— stomachic, diuretic, expectorant (in bronchitis and asthma); also goitrogenic.
Juice of leaves and seeds—antibacterial.
