ÚLTIMOS AVANCES EN LA QUÍMICA Y ACTIVIDADES BACTERIOLÓGICAS EN LAS PLANTAS MEDICINALES= Medicinal plants, last advances on chemistry and bacteria activities on the medicinal herbs
A new triterpene, 3beta,6beta,21beta-trihydroxyolean-12-ene (I) and a new iridoid, 8alpha-methyl-8beta-hydroxy-6beta-(3',4'-dimethoxy)benzoyloxy-1alpha,3alpha-dimethoxyoctahydrocyclopenta[c]pyran (II) were isolated from the trunk bark of a specimen of Tabebuia heptaphylla (Bignoniaceae) collected in the "Pantanal" of Mato Grosso do Sul. Brazil. Twelve known compds. were also obtained in this work, comprising four iridoids, 6-O-p-hydroxybenzoylajugol, 6-O-p-methoxybenzoylajugol, 6-O-3'',4''-dimethoxybenzoylajugol, 8alpha-methyl-8beta-hydroxy-6beta-(4'-hydroxy)benzoyloxy- 1alpha,3alpha-dimethoxyoctahydrocyclopenta[c]pyran, a cyclopentene dialdehyde, 2-formyl-5-(3',4'-dimethoxybenzoyloxy)-3-methyl-2-cyclopentene-1-acetaldehyde, a phenylethanoid glycoside, verbascoside and three benzoic acid derivs., p-hydroxybenzoic, p-methoxybenzoic and 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acids, in addn. to squalene, sitostenone and sitosterol. The antioxidant properties of the isolated compds. were also evaluated in this work.

The exts. of plants belonging to Tabebuia genus of Bignoniaceae family have the novel uses for promoting hair growth, preventing alopecia and relieving scalp itching. The above plants belonging to Tabebuia genus of Bignoniaceae comprise Tabebuia heptaphylla, Tabebuia caraiba, Tabebuia cassinoides, Tabebuia chrysotricha, Tabebuia impetiginosa, Tabebuia serratifolia, and Tabebuia vellozoi Toledo. The ext. is obtained by extg. with a solvent (such as methanol, ethanol, and 1,3-butylene glycol) at room temp., distg. off the solvent, and drying under reduced pressure. Pharmaceutical or cosmetic prepns. for external use on hair can be obtained from the ext. of one or more of above plants.
occurs in the tropical rain forests between Mexico and Argentina. Watery extracts of the bark were already used by the Incas to cure a variety of diseases. The bark is still used to treat leukaemia. The plant is said to have antibacterial, antitumoral, antiviral, antifungal, antiinflammatory and antipyretic properties; it was formerly also used as an antisyphilitc. The Camp as in Peru apply it against cancer ( GENTRY 1992B, KREHER 1988/9, REYNEL et al. 1999).

Summary
The genus Tabebuia (Bignoniaceae) is extensively distributed throughout the American Continent, and can be found from Mexico, throughout the Neotropics down to Central Argentina. The medicinal use of T. impetiginosa is very common in our country in the treatment of a wide range of ailments. From a pharmacological point of view, several in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies have been performed for this species, mainly in the fields on experimental oncology, inflammation, microbiology and immunology. During the seventies, many clinical studies aimed to determine the antitumour properties of the naphtoquinones (β-lapachone and lapachol), together with their mechanisms of action. Thus, lapacho became a reputed medicinal plant not only in the region, but also throughout the World. However, clinical results turned out to be ambiguous and the levels of toxicity observed for the compounds studied were relatively high, leading to a diminishment in the interest towards this species by the scientific community.
