In Venezuela common from the Andes to Guiana, between 200 to 1.500 meters above sea level.

Ethnobotanical and general use

Medical use
The plant is mainly used medicinally. The useful parts are leaves, young shoots, roots, flowers, fruits, seeds and the entire plant. Like other species of the genus, the plant has tonic and stimulant properties and is used against depression, as a tranquilizer and an emmenagogue, it is applied against catarrh and bronchitis. It has digestive and antispasmodic properties. According to RODRIGUEZ (1983), the leaves in decoction help against catarrh and bronchitis; flowers and leaves in decoction are an emmenagogue and a uterine tonic, roots and flowers in infusion are used against chicken pox. The entire plant and the fruit in decoction is applied as an ophthalmic and against rheumatism. Twigs and flowers in infusion are used as a bath and antispasmodic. There are quite a few species of Lantana which are medicinally used and have similar applications. The best known species is Lantana camara L. In Venezuela this species is very popular and it is recommended in baths as a protection against bad luck.

Method of use
The remedy is usually prepared as a tea, putting a handful leaves into a liter of boiling water.For a bath, a much larger quantity of leaves is used. It is suggested that a bath helps against debility, deformations and tuberculosis of the bones.

Healing properties
The most important healing properties are tonic, stimulant, digestive and antispasmodic effects.

Chemical contents
The plant contains the alkaloid lantanin which has effects similar to those of quinine, and is antispasmodic. A furanonaphthoquinone has been identified in L. trifolia. The seeds of L. camara contain an essential oil which is anthelmintic. The aromatic substances are found in the glands.

Toxicity
The polycyclic triterpenoid principle called lantaden A is toxic. The species of Lantana have to be handled with care because of their toxicity
