Origin: Brazil, Caribbean, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, French Guiana, Honduras, India, Nicaragua, Panama, Sri Lanka, Venezuela.

Leaf: Three leaves are put in water and the liquid is drunk daily for remedying high blood pressure.

Fruit: One or two pickled fruits are eaten for controlling diarrhoea. Spoiled (rotten) fruit is rubbed on "lota" (skin fungus) disease to make it disappear. In French Guiana, syrup is used for inflammatory diseases, especially hepatitis. Decoction of unpeeled fruit for hepatitis, fever, diarrhoea and colic.

Origin:
Native to Malaysia; cultivated throughout the country.

Action:
A syrup made from the fruits is used in febrile excitement, haemorrhages and internal haemorrhoids; also in diarrhoea, bilious colic and hepatitis. The fruit is used for scurvy. An infusion of flowers is given for cough.
