Dichloromethane, methanol and aqueous extracts of the aerial parts of Terminalia australis were evaluated for their antifungal activity. The methanol and aqueous extracts were found to be effective against the tested Aspergillus and Candida strains.
Summary
Terminalia australis (Combretaceae) is a yellow flower tree known by the local name of palo amarillo, that can be found in the Northeastern region of Argentina, down to the Plate River shores. Only one pharmacological study has been performed for this species showing antimycotic activity in the extracts, which resulted equal or superior to that observed for synthetic compounds used as standards. The high content of tannins in the bark could also justify its popular claim in the treatment of diarrhea.
