Stem: Bark and wood is astringent, used to treat chronic diarrhoea in French Guiana.

Origin:
Native to tropical America and the West Indies. Grown in Indian gardens.

Action:
Astringent. Used for atonic dyspepsia, diarrhoea, summer diarrhoea, dysentery, internal haemorrhages, menorrhagia, leucorrhoea. (It imparts red colour to urine and stool. Incompatible with chalk or lime-water.)

Folk medicinal uses

Beckwith says that the chipped bark is used with sugar to make a drink. The wood and bark were formerly used by Jamaican medical men as an astringent for diarrhoea and dysentery.
