Stem: Bark is pulverised in liquor and used as a stimulant and an aphrodisiac. Bark is very aromatic, with taste of pepper, used in an energizing tonic; contains aromatic essential oil, a resin, gum and tannin. Said to be a counter-poison to the root of Passiflora quadrangularis ("barbadine"), and to be an ingredient of curare made by Indians of the upper Amazon.
