PARTE UTILIZADA= Used part: Corteza.
ACCION FARMACOLOGICA= Pharmacological action: Amargo, astringente.
COMPOSICIÓN QUÍMICA= Chemical composition: The following gums were investigated: Cajueiro (Anacardium occidentale), Catingueira (Caesalpinia sp.), and Angico (Piptadenia rigida). For the hydrolysis of gums and identification of monosaccharides the method of McIlroy (C.A. 47, 1065c) was used. The gums were refluxed for 7 hrs. in N H2SO4 and in the hydrolyzate the sugars were identified by paper chromatography. The following sugars could be identified: in Catingueira gum: arabinose, xylose, ribose, galactose, and rhamnose in Angico gum: arabinose, xylose, ribose, and galactose in Cajueiro gum: arabinose, galactose, and rhamnose.
