DIVERSIDAD GENÉTICA Y MEJORAMIENTO DE PLANTAS MEDICINALES= Medicinal plants and improvement of medicinal herbs:

Because of the great degradation of the tropical forest in Brazil and in São Paulo State, the São Paulo Forestry Institute, in the last decades, has established trials where the populations are avaliated on their potential to ex situ genetic conservation. One of the species which has been is the "cabreúva" - Myroxylon peruiferum L.f. Allemão (Papilonoideae), a late secondary tree species widely distributed in Brazil and of great potential in the national and international wood market. The analysis of mean of height, mean annual growth and diameter at breast height (DBH) and field observations gave evidence of the slow growth. The variances analysis for height the trees showed significant genetic variation in "F" test for all ages studied. This result together with the coefficient of genetic variation, fenotipic variation within the plots and, heritability, that were very high for all the DBH and height on the ages studied, allow to be concluded that this material has a good potential for ex situ conservation and also for future utilization as a seed source for genetic improvement.

Bark: Bark is scraped and boiled and the water drunk for colds and diarrhea, by the Guyana Patamona.

Fruit: Crushed fruits are used as an inhalant for treating asthma, by the Guyana Patamona. Fruits are strung in a necklace and worn around the neck so that their odor can be inhaled to clear the nasal and respiratory system as a treatment for colds, by the Guyana Patamona.

Folk medicinal uses

The balm together with the species Lantana camara L., known as "cambara" are used in homoeophaty, to medicate influenza, coughing and bronchitis. According to Lewis et al (1977), the balm is used by South American Indians, to clean their teeth and is also used by the Incas and Colombians to staunch bleeding.

Bark In the State of Minus Gerais, the bark is usually employed to overcome catarrhs, night sweat, coughing, skin eruption, to wash wounds, in the curing of colds, diseases of the bladder and in the treatment of scabies.
