Summary
Lycopodium saururus (Lycopodiaceae) is a xerophytic plant easily found in the Andes of Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. Although widely reputed as an aphrodisiac agent, club moss has recently become of interest to scientists also due to its potential acetylcholinesterase effects in some neurological diseases such as Alzheimers disease, Miastenia gravis, and its action on memory and learning. However, the aphrodisiac properties of this species have only been partially proven in an in vitro assay using corpus cavernosum of guinea pigs. Due to the potential toxicity of club moss, this plant should only be used under medical supervision.
