Historical background
CAULIN mentions P. quadrangularis with its fruits called 'parchas' in 1760. Between 1786 and 1789, ALCEDO described the same species and mentions the heavy load of the fruits which are of a lustrous yellow colour and have a sweet fragrance: it has a subtle peel and a delicate flesh, about 2 3 fingers thick and the hollow in the center is filled with an orange juice, even sweeter and more fragrant, with seeds covered by a delicious flesh (aril) which is also edible. In 1826, ANDRES BELLO dedicated some kind of poem to the 'Parcha Granadina'. ABBAD and HUMBOLDT mention also the plant.
