ACCIÓN FARMACOLÓGICA= Pharmacological action: Sialagogo, diaforético, diurético, tenífugo, purgante.
COMPOSICIÓN QUÍMICA= Chemical composition: Previously isoleted classes of constituents. Previous studies of the Argentine Fagara/Zanthosxylum species have shown them to be rich sources of quaternary alkaloids. Coumarins were reported only from Z. coco Gill and F. riedeliana. New-isoleted constituents. F. riedeliana: Lupeol (0.0084%), norchelerythrine (0,008), (-)-hinokinin (0,006), 2-(3``,4``-methylendioxybenzyl)-3-(3`,4`-dimethoxybenzyl) butyrolactone (0,002), arctigenin methyl ether (0,005) and scoparone (0,00028). F. hyemalis: beta-amyrin (0,0107), (-)hinokinin (0,0025) and savinin (0,0075). F. pterota: 2-(3``,4``-methyllendioxybenzyl)-3-(3`,4`-dimethoxybenzyl) butyrolactone (0,0029) and norchelerythrine (0,00075).2-(3``,4``-methyllendioxybenzyl)-3-(3`,4`-dimethoxybenzyl) butyrolactone (0,0029) and norchelerythrine (0,00075). F. rhoifolia: beta-amyrin (0,023), morchelerythrine (0,001), umbelliferone (0,0006) and scopoletin (0,0003).

Stem: Decoction of trunk-bark used as a hot bath to soothe venereal chancres, and to remedy eruptions of pimples on the legs of children. Macerated bark mixed with wine or rum is a bitter tonic having anti malarial and anti-blennorrhagic properties. Bark is boiled with water and drunk as an anti-malarial, by the Guyana Patamona.
Bark and Leaf: Inner bark and leaves are boiled, and the water drunk as an anti-pyretic, by the Guyana Patamona.
