ACCIÓN FARMACOLÓGICA= Pharmacological action: Estimulante (hojas, flores, frutos), sialagogo (estimula la secreción de saliva), sudorífico.

COMPOSICIÓN QUÍMICA= Chemical composition: The chloride of a quaternary base, named tembetarine I [R = H, X = Cl (II)], m. 236-7, [alpha]29D 123.3 (0.9 g. EtOH), was the only major alkaloid igolated from exts. of the bark of F. naranjillo. II was shown to be the N-Me deriv. of (+)-reticuline (Gobinath, et al., CA 53, 15112d) as follows: II treated with CH2N2 gave N-methyl-(+)-laudanosine, and alkylation of II with EtI produced I [R = Et, X = I (III)], m. 91-2grados, [alpha]18D 96.2grados (c 0.85, CHCl3). Oxidn. of the Hofmann degradation product, m. 142-3grados, from III gave 3-ethoxy-p-anisic acid, and KMnO4 oxidn. of the tertiary base from III afforded 7-ethoxy-3,4-dihydro-6-methoxy-2-methylisocarbostyril. (+)-II oxidized by the method of Franck and Schlingloff (CA 58, 9153b) with aq. FeCl3 soln. produced 3% (+)-laurifoline chloride (IV), m. 275grados, [alpha]22D 25grados.
