Nota de alcance (en)

Which is a small shrub, native to the West Indies, likewise has medicinal properties, being used for flu, fever, and diseases of the respiratory organs (aerial parts) as well as for diseases of the skin (leaf). The aromatic leaves contain the toxic principle lantadeno which produces hypotension and hypothermia; they have however, antispasmodic and antibiotic activities and are occasionally used as a tonic and stimulant; in this case, a decoction of the entire plant is used. MORTON (1994) mentions that a decoction of the entire plant is appreciated as an intestinal stimulant (MANFRED 1947). A tea of the leaves is used as an emmenagogue, stomachic and diuretic, and to relieve rheumatism, colds, fever, hypertension and diarrhoea, when taken internally; externally it is applied for measles and chickenpox. A flower decoction serves as a sudorific, a decoction of the root as a pectoral, antiasthmatic and for the treatment of venereal diseases. The leaves are externally applied to cuts, ulcers and bruises (MORTON 1981). HERBERT ET AL. (1991) isolated from lantana leaves the substance verbascoside (or acetocide) with antimicrobial, immunosuppressive and antitumour activity. According to AHMED et al. (1971, 1972) the leaves lower blood pressure and accelerated deep respiration, stimulate intestinal movement and inhibit uterine motility. Toxic species of Lantana contain the tetracyclic triterpenes A and B. The plants are rich in manganese, potassium and nitrogen and are therefore used as a fertilizer and to suppress weeds. Spiny forms are planted as protective hedges. The roughest types of Lantana leaves serve to polish wood. Paper can be made of the stems. Twigs are made into toothbrushes. Lantana leaves are also used to scent tobacco. The essential oil of the leaves is of interest for perfume manufacture (MORTON 1994).

Abstract
Lantana camara (Verbenaceae) is a widely distributed species throughout the American continent, from Canada down to Argentina and Uruguay. Also introduced in other continents, this shrub is also known by the common name of lantana or common sage, and the infusion of the leaves is used as a sedative, tonic, stimulant, febrifuge, anti-rheumatic, and diuretic amongst others. To date no clinical studies have been performed in this species, mostly due to the fact that it is considered a toxic plant. However, some isolated constituents have shown interesting biological activities. Furthermore, the triterpene (toxic) fraction can now be isolated from other parts of the plant, thus reducing its toxicity.

Folk medicinal uses

The leaves of Lantana camara provide the drug Herba Camara. This plant is commonly employed in African native medicine for coughs, colds and fevers. With leaves of banana and Morinda lucida it is also used in steam baths for the treatment of yellow fever. In the Grenadines Lantana camara is a common remedy for dysmenorrhoea and for morning sickness in pregnancy. Both in Jamaica and West Africa use is made of the astringent properties of Lantana spp. in the treatment of sores.
