ACCION FARMACOLOGICA= Pharmacological action: El látex se emplea externamente para eliminiar verrugas y aplicado en las encías para aliviar el dolor dentario; la decocción de la corteza se emplea externamente como antiséptico.

COMPOSICIÓN QUÍMICA= Chemical composition: Besides some usual fatty acids, the seed oil of Sabastiana brasiliensis (Euphorbiaceae) contains up to 39% (estimated by ultraviolet spectroscopy) of α-parinaric acid (cis,trans,trans,cis-9,11,13,15-octadecatetraenoic acid). The fatty acids were analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry as their methyl esters. The structure of α-parinaric acid was proven by a combination of chemical and spectroscopic methods, conducted with the crude oil, the methyl ester mixture, and the isolated fatty acid methyl ester. Complete assignment of the 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shifts of α-parinaric acid was carried out by two-dimensional NMR experiments.

Summary
Lecherón (Sebastiania brasiliensis – Euphorbiaceae) is a common tree that grows in the Northern and Eastern parts of Argentina. The latex is used externally in the treatment of warts. The extracts have shown interesting antiherpetic and antimycotic actions, although further clinical and toxicological studies will be needed in order to validate the medicinal claims of this species.
