The easily prepd. isoirigenin benzylated yielded 78% 7,3'-dibenzylisoirigenin, m. 117° (monoacetate m. 91-2°), converted by treatment with EtOK to give 89% yield of 7,3'-dibenzyloxy-5-hydroxy-6,4',5'-trimethoxyisoflavone I (R = PhCH2) (II), m. 150-1°; monoacetate m. 172-3°.  Catalytic debenzylation of II gave irigenin (I, R = H), m. 191-2° (triacetate m. 126-7°) identical in all respects with the naturally occurring flavone from Iris florentina.
