ACCIÓN FARMACOLÓGICA= Pharmacological action: Febrífugo, emético, astringente, en casos de hepatitis y demás dolencias hepáticos, en enfermadades de vias urinarias.
COMPOSICIÓN QUÍMICA= Chemical composition: The volatile oils from the leaves and stem barks of Cedrela fissilis were submitted to GC-MS analysis and separation by adsorption chromatography. The fractions were analysed by GC, 1H- and 13C-NMR as well as GC-MS. The major components found in the leaf oil were β-caryophyllene (26.3%) and bicyclogermacrene (34.6% , while in the stem bark oil the major compounds were β-bisabolene (10.9%) and globulol (10.9%). In an antibacterial assay, only the leaf oil was able to inhibit growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Eschorichia coli. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

DIVERSIDAD GENÉTICA Y MEJORAMIENTO DE PLANTAS MEDICINALES= Medicinal plants and improvement of medicinal herbs:
The aim this paper was to determine the pattern of mating system, genetic diversity and genetic structure of tropical tree species from different successional stages by using genetic markers. Adult trees and families of natural population were sampled of six species of three successional stages: pioneers (Trema micrantha and Cecropia pachystachya), secondary (Cedrela fissilis and Cariniana legalis) and climaxic stage (Maytenus aquifolia and Esenbeckia leiocarpa). Neither species or successional stages showed any pattern of multilocus outcrossing rate (t̂m), except for pioneer species which showed tendency for a higher outcrossing rate among related individuals than species of other successional stages (variation of 0.071 to 0.199). All species revealed deviation from random outcrossing patterns. T. micrantha and E. leiocarpa showed the highest values of correlation of paternity (r̂p), suggesting a high proportion of full sibs in their families. No clear pattern for the distribution of genetic diversity among and within populations of species from different successional stages was observed. The results indicated that the genetic structure of these species is associated with patterns of reproduction and demography within populations. Species with higher outcrossing rates, more aggregated distribution and higher population density showed smaller genetic divergence among populations than species with higher selfing rates and lower population density.

Summary
Cedrela fissilis Vell. (Meliaceae) is a large tree that can be found throughout the neotropics, from Mexico to Northeastern Argentina. The bark is widely used as a febrifuge, emetic, astringent, and hepatic agent, while the leaves´ infusion is effective in the treatment of urinary ailments. Some pharmacological studies have shown interesting activity for the aqueous extract of the leaves, mostly in the microbiological and immunological fields. Meliacine, a triterpene also present in the neem tree (Melia azedarach - Meliaceae), has shown antiviral activity against Herpes virus simplex types I and II.
