Folk medicinal uses
In East Africa the plant is a remedy against dysentry and diarrhoea anu it also finds use as a tonic (Bally, 1937). In India and other parts of Asia, it is again considered to be a tonic and it is also employed as an antipyretic and anthelmintic (Watt & BreyerBrandwijk, 1962; Kirtikar & Basu, 1933). According to Oliver-Bever (1983) the tonic action is due to a stimulant or depressant action on the autonomous nervous system. The related species J. macrantha is used in Nigeria in the treatment of ulcers and snake-bite (Oliver. 1960).
