1) Polygonum L. genus (Polygonaceae) is represented in Argentina by 21 species and some of them have been used in the traditional medicine of our country to treat affections related with fungal infections, such as skin ailments and vaginal diseases. With the aim of contributing to the correct ethnopharmacol. use of this genus, in the present work we describe the antifungal properties of P. persicaria (species not studied up to now) and the bio-guided isolation of the main active compds. Results showed that dichloromethane exts. was the most active with MICs (Min. Inhibitory Concns.) between 31.2 - 1000 mg/mL, validating the ethnopharmacol. use of P. persicaria to treat affections related with fungal infections in the Argentinean traditional medicine.

A method of treating cancer by targeting two proteases, MMP-9 and cathepsin B is provided. Therapeutic compns. comprising one or more plant exts. that inhibit MMP-9 and/or cathepsin B, which are capable of inhibiting neoplastic and/or endothelial cell migration, tumor growth, tumor-induced angiogenesis and/or metastasis are also provided. The therapeutic compns. of the invention can be used in the treatment of cancer, and, methods of inhibiting tumor growth, tumor metastasis, and/or tumor-induced angiogenesis using the therapeutic compns. alone or in combination with an anti-cancer agent are, therefore, also provided.
