A DNA barcoding approach to identify plant species in multiflower honey

The purpose of this study was to test the ability of DNA barcoding to identify the plant origins of processed honey. Four multifloral honeys produced at different sites in a floristically rich area in the northern Italian Alps were examd. by using the rbcL and trnH-psbA plastid regions as barcode markers. An extensive ref. database of barcode sequences was generated for the local flora to det. the taxonomic compn. of honey. Thirty-nine plant species were identified in the four honey samples, each of which originated from a mix of common plants belonging to Castanea, Quercus, Fagus and several herbaceous taxa. Interestingly, at least one endemic plant was found in all four honey samples, providing a clear signature for the geog. identity of these products. DNA of the toxic plant Atropa belladonna was detected in one sample, illustrating the usefulness of DNA barcoding for evaluating the safety of honey

Anthyllis vulneraria/Mesorhizobium metallidurans, an efficient symbiotic nitrogen fixing association able to grow in mine tailings highly contaminated by Zn, Pb and Cd

The excessive concns. of toxic heavy metals in mine tailings and their very low N content make soil reclamation strategies by phytostabilization difficult. Our objective was to test if the symbiotic assocn. between the legume Anthyllis
vulneraria subsp. carpatica and the bacteria Mesorhizobium metallidurans originating from highly polluted mine tailings is able to increase N concn. in soils with contrasting Zn, Pb and Cd contents. Plants of A. vulneraria subsp. carpatica from
a mine site and of a non-metallicolous subsp. praeopera from non-polluted soil were inoculated with a metallicolous or a non-metallicolous compatible Mesorhizobium spp. and grown on low and high heavy metal-contaminated soils. In contaminated soil, many nodules were obsd. when the metallicolous A. vulneraria was inoculated with its rhizobium species M. metallidurans, whereas the non-metallicolous A. vulneraria died after a few weeks regardless of the rhizobium inoculant. Eighty percent of the total nitrogen was derived from biol. nitrogen fixation through the assocn. between metallicolous A. vulneraria and the rhizobium grown on metal-enriched soil. The ability of the metallicolous A. vulneraria to develop a high nitrogen fixing potential opens new possibilities for promoting a low-maintenance plant cover and for stabilizing the vegetation in high heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Abstract

An edible product comprises a fibrous plant product and a plant ext. applied to it. Thus, a plant may be sepd. into a plant ext. and a fibrous plant product. Subsequently, the fibrous plant product and the plant ext. are combined to obtain a reconstructed or reconstituted version of the original plant with improved properties. For example, certain substances of the original plant may be easily water-sol. and others not. In this way, it is possible to accelerate or even control the release or extn. rate of substances. The fibrous plant product may form a layer to which the plant ext. is applied for use in food, diet supplements, nutraceuticals, etc. The plants used may be all plants comprising one or more substances of interest for an edible product.
