In Surinam, the green fruit is cooked with Citrus aurantiifolia for an abortive agent. The immature fruit is eaten to abort a fetus less than 1 month old, by the Guyana Patamona. Used as abortive in NW Guyana.</p>

<p><strong>Origin</strong>:<br />Native to South America; cultivated mostly in Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tripura and Orissa.<br /><br /><strong>Action</strong>:<br />Anti-inflammatory (fresh juice used as a gargle for sore throat). A proteolytic enzyme, bromelain, is derived from the stem—anti inflammatory, smooth muscle relaxant, digester, inhibitor of blood platelet aggregation.
